A Rainy Day First Meeting at Home

A huge part of a birth story is the moments after. The moments of coming home and meeting the loved ones that will forever surround you. This story seriously melts my heart every time I look through these photos. The moments this little brand new baby girl met her big brother. It was everything you want in a first meeting.
Amber and Chad were awesome, they got home from the hospital a day or so after bringing this little one into the world. They took the time to wash up relax and introduce little Milly to her new surroundings. And they planned to have little Elias come meet his little sister the following day and have me there to photograph the genuine and real reactions and love that was poured out. Now toddlers are often the hardest kids to react the way you may want. I always encourage parents to have pretty low expectations when it comes to first meetings and fresh 48s because thats just a whole lot of change for little mind. But since Amber and Chad are incredible documentary photographers, they knew exactly what they were getting. They wanted to full joy, crazy antics, tantrums and true life that now being a family of 4 would bring.
The moment Elias got home he ran straight to his mom, snuggled in on her and asked for a snack. There was no notice of little Milly sitting in the center of the room, he was right in his mode and it was so sweet to see. After getting his chicken nuggets (a must) Chad prompted him a bit to go explore the living room. Those reactions were seriously priceless. He was curious, joyful and a little shocked. When Amber went to feed little Milly, Elias was so focused on her not eating mommy and insisted she eat some of his nuggets. It was seriously the cutest thing, him shoving chicken nuggets towards them, even laying them in her little basinet as a tempting lure away from his mom.
I think it was important to let Elias do his thing. Find some joy and get back to his energetic self. So we all followed him into his room where we watched him find wonder and normalcy amongst his balloons. The beauty of this moment was watching Chad and Amber in their pure patience. There was no "right" way for Elias to react except the way he did.
As our session continued there was a serious storm rolling in, clouding up all the windows. in order to get enough light I suggested we take some photos outside while the rain still wasn't coming down. It was peaceful to see the clouds roll in and daddy cuddling his brand new baby. It was also adorable when their sweet neighbor came by to drop of treats and meet their new little girl. We were out there maybe 10 minutes before the wind picked up and swept us back inside but those moments of joy and family sitting on their porch were truly some of my favorites.
I love this session because it really takes you through the story. The first meeting to the processing little brain of a new big brother. In so many ways Home fresh 48s may be the way to go. Especially when you have older siblings, those moments of first meeting can be all over the place but what better place to do them, than in the comfort of their own surroundings. Letting those new big brothers and sisters work through the change and joy they feel all while surrounded by the normal home they know.
