3 Reasons to Invest in Photo Albums Through your Photographer
I get it, we live in a digital world.
We spend weeks and months picking out the perfect photographer with the style we love and packages that fit our budget. But what do we do when the images are taken and the sessions are done? We typically just let those images sit on our computers, right? Or maybe we print a hand full for our walls. But are we getting the full value of our photos with them just stored up on the computer waiting to be searched for?
I am 100% guilty of this!
I was a very content digital millennial who wanted the quantity without thinking about how I would use, see and value them in my day today. Before Jude was born I very rarely got around to printing the photos I took. Chris and I had maybe 4 professional sessions, a wedding and traveled to over 11 countries camera in tow and still only had 1 wedding album that took me 2 years to print. (which we have actually looked through and had friends look through over 30 times in the last few years)
The rest of my images sat on my computer and I only saw them when I was looking for something to share on social media. It honestly breaks my heart, because I know I’m not the only one who is missing out of printed photography in their day to day. Especially because I have those personal memories as a child. Getting on the floor to dig through my parent’s old photo albums and print boxes. In the 90s that’s all we had, thousands of tangible prints from as far back as my grandfather’s childhood. They told the story of my parent’s wedding day, the day I was brought home from the hospital and the silly childhood they created for us. I could hold those photos and albums right there in my hands, I could laugh and share them with friends and boyfriends well into my 20s. And yet I sit here with a brand new little life and thousands of photos on my computer.
So 2020 is the year! I’m making that change for me and for you. I want us all to print the art we invest in. There are so many ways now to go about investing in printing but I would be amiss to leave you searching on your own. Because I know the truth too, and that is that not all printing and albums are the same.
So today I’m sharing my 3 top reasons for ordering your albums and investing in tangible art through your photographer. Because it’s more than just quality (though that’s an important one) it’s also about knowledge, convenience and investing in something that will last.
1. Knowledge
Your Photographer does the learning about colors, printing and quality for you!
Your photographer spends weeks, months and years finding the perfect print shop to work with. They look for quality and service but also a print shop that sees their editing style and colors and can replicate them perfectly. That’s honestly something very hard to find. My colorful edits and bold black and whites look like faded blahs when printed at the pharmacy or big brand stores. And there is nothing worse than investing in your favorite photographer for a family or birth session and then when you go to print them they look nothing like the computer.
So trust your photographer, not only do they know where to go to get the colors and prints to look right, but they also hold themselves accountable to make sure your prints turn out beautiful and authentic to the art they created for you. They take the time to learn where and who they can trust so that you can trust them in turn.
2. Convenience
Let your photographer do the design, creation, and order for you
so you can just enjoy the art!
Your photographer does the time-intensive custom designing for you. The part that keeps most of us from sitting down to print an album is often the album creating itself. It involves a lot of extra time we just don’t have. Whether you have absolute favorite images or want an album that truly tells the story perfectly, the organization of images takes time. Ordering through your photographer means getting not only the quality and expert design but getting the convenience of the art being created for you. Sometimes just being able to look through your album at beautifully flowing memories is worth it enough to leave the designing and creating to the professionals.
3. Long-Lasting
Your Photographer has access to the highest level products that are made to last!
I see albums online all the time that are quick and easy and under $30. It sounds like a great deal and an easy way to print your digitals. You may not care that much about the printing colors and just want to have the tangible images in print. I really do get it and I truly wish it were that easy but the quality for those albums to last is just not there. Cardboard album covers and flimsy paper just don’t last very long and the ink and color fade within the year and often change color altogether. The magazine-style paper albums are cool but unless you left them on the shelf untouched, they will likely rip and fall apart in time too.
Give it 3-7 years and all of those albums won’t be worth even the $30 you spent. Printing albums really should be about investing in something you can have for a lifetime, pass down to your little ones and hold tightly to.
