What is Evergreen Marketing and How can it help your small Business?

Three Evergreen Marketing Strategies to Utilize in your Birth Business

When it comes to marketing your small business it can feel like there are a lot of options and a lot of things up in the air. Truly there is no right or even ‘wrong’ way to market your products and services but there may be easier, more efficient, and long-lasting ways. Today I wanted to share the three strategies of marketing that are considered Evergreen and why you may want to invest in them over things like social media when you are limited on time.

The first question you may be asking is, “What does Evergreen mean” Well it simply means long-lasting and is derived from plants that stay green and glossy all year long. Also if you’re a Barbara Streisand fan (like I am) you may be singing her famous song ‘Ageless and Evergreen’ over and over in your head. But basically, Evergreen marketing is marketing that has little to no risk of fading away or being lost. Let me paint a picture for you of why this is a helpful topic to discuss, especially when you are trying to be strategic with your time and energy to grow your small business. One morning back in 2019 I woke up to alerts all over my email/phone of someone trying to access my Instagram account. They were somewhere across the world and had been locking themselves out of my account all night trying to figure out my password. It was like 30 emails and notifications. It was pretty scary to think that if they had gotten in, my entire account could have been wiped or worse my reputation ruined by something they posted or did. Before this, I was not a savy password person either ‘1234dogname’ ring any bells? So the fact that they didn’t get in was more of a miracle than something I had done to protect myself. I sat back and wondered, “What would I do” would I start all over? And yes for most people who get hacked, they just have to start completely from 0. It really goes to show how out of our control social media marketing truly is. While you run your account, it’s never really yours to own it’s owned by Zuckerburg or whoever is running Facebook/Meta these days. And if you are a birth photographer sharing raw birth images often you’ve probably experienced the threats of deactivation on your account countless times. I definitely have some dings on my record and could lose this platform I have invested in for so many years at a moments notice over something as simple as a nipple.

All of that storytelling to say, that’s why it’s often very beneficial to invest in marketing strategies that are yours, long-lasting, and not at risk.

There are three evergreen marketing strategies

that come to mind.

Website

This is probably the most important marketing tool for any business. It’s basically your home online. You get to create it to represent you exactly as you are and your services as clearly and concisely as you offer them. Nowadays creating a simple website is pretty easy even for the less tech savy among us. While there are ways to complicate it you definitely can have something simple and userfriendly to get started. A great option is using Website Templates!

Blogging

People really underestimate the power of blogging. For several years there was a belief that posting a bunch of photos was the way to do it but now we’ve learned that simple, informative, and talking to your ideal client is the way to go. Blogging builds SEO which makes your website higher on Google searching and can be a basis for your content on a platform that’s not at risk of getting hacked or unpopular.

Email Marketing

This is another one that a lot of people struggle with. It feels like a 90s style of marketing when you can do so much free stuff over on social media. But email marketing is like sharing your info, specials, and content to warm friends; people who have already shown an interest in YOU and aren’t as likely to scroll past. Email marketing has been a favorite tool of mine throughout the years for booking mini-session days or inviting families to a “meet the doula” event. Even if you only email a few times a year this is one of the tried and true ways to establish a community around your work and purpose. I love using FloDesk for it’s incredibly beautiful and user-friendly designs! If you want to try it out, enjoy 30 free trial and 50% off your first year through this link!
